My own song “Frog Pond” will be the song of the day October 3.
“The solo project of Christchurch-based musician, producer, songwriter Steven King’s six-track EP The Tenth March has been released digitally on iTunes. King delivered my burnt copy to The Press, complete with hand-doodled artwork. Somewhat ambitiously and to his credit, King takes on all roles right down to the cover art.
The Tenth March chronicles the story of a first love that was subsequently lost. King’s voice has an unusual yet effective quaver. You know how sometimes when you cry and you end up making hiccupy sobs you can’t stop? King sings as if he has just stopped weeping such tears, and although it takes a bit of getting used to, it works well in this context.
King cites Eliott Smith as an influence and it’s easy to imagine him as the Chirstchurch version. Tracks three, four, and five stood out to me.”
